How Eco-friendly Is Cotton?

Did You Know

Eco-friendly is often used to describe products that don’t damage the environment. But what does that mean for cotton? In this episode, we explore how eco-friendly cotton really is.

Cotton is a very water-intensive crop. This is a problem because only about 1% of all the water in the world is fresh & accessible to us. And 70% of that is used for growing crops. That leaves us with very little water to satisfy the world’s needs. So, we have to be careful to not overuse it. Unfortunately, cotton requires a lot of water even after it is harvested, for processes like cleaning, bleaching and dyeing, before it reaches the consumer. According to the WWF, it takes 2,700 liters of water to make one cotton t shirt. The production process may also involve the use of many chemicals that cause water pollution. And it also takes a lot of energy to grow, manufacture, transport and care for cotton products .
