Populations of many coastal furbearers have been in decline. One culprit is the increasing prevalence of new bugs. These pests can damage the health of furbearers and their prey, leading to population declines. The bugs that inhabit coastal areas can be a nuisance, but they can also be harmful to wildlife. Northern American minks and river otters are both predatory marine animals that eat lots of fish and intertidal organisms. They both have generalist diets, meaning they’ll scarf down pretty much anything you put in front of them, and this makes them easy to cook for, but it also exposes them to a wide variety of parasites.
